January 1875: Joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Salisbury and posted to Forton Barracks, Gosport, Hampshire. In December 1877 he landed with the Naval Brigade in the campaign against the Kaffirs, which lasted until the following March, and in November 1878 he was a member of the Naval Brigade which opperated against the Zulus and was engaged until July 1879. For these Campaigns he was awarded a medal with clasp. He served on various ships following this and retired from the service in 1896, He entered Portsmouth Dockyard shortly after his retirement from the Corps, but in November 1908 he fell from a staging into the dry dock, and recieved multiple injuries from which he never fully recovered.

George's funeral was held at Anns Hill Cemetery, the service was conduted by Rev. M.Rich, which was semi-military, Marines from Eastney Barracks acting as pall bearers, whilst the coffin was enveloped in a Union Jack, a Marine bugler sounded the Last Post.
The chief morners were: The widow (Mrs Selina Ann Viney), Jack, George and Harry Viney (Sons), Daisy, Annie and Olive Viney (Daughters) Charley and Steve (Sons-in-Law) Mr J. Crawford (Brother-in-Law), Dora and Millie (Nieces), Mrs Hocking, and Miss Watson. The arrangements were carried out by H. D. Osborn, of North Cross Street.
