At the Police Office this morning (7 Oct 1859), a Mr. Thomas Martin appeared before the Bench, to answer a charge of abduction, in having married a young girl named Zipporah Simmons, daughter of Mr. Simmons, innkeeper, Waurn Ponds, with- out his consent, she being under 17 years of age. The Bench, consisting of the Mayor and Police Magistrate, ordered the case to be adjourned for adjudication before the Newtown and Chilwell Bench, the offence having been committed within its jurisdiction. The charges against the Rev. Charles Hodges, the officiating clergyan, and Owen Johns and William Lambie, as accessories before the act, were also ordered to stand over for disposal before the same Bench.
