Nerissa Jane Irene Bowes-Lyon

  General Notes:

Nerissa and her sister Katherine were Mentally Impared from Birth. They was raised at home, but in 1941 at the age of 22 and 15 they were placed in the Royal Earlswood hospital for people with developmental disabilities, by their mother, who continued visiting Nerissa and Katharine until she died in 1966. Their father had died in 1930. Both Nerissa and Katherine had the mental age of 3.

1941 - 1968: Nerissa lived at the Royal Earlswood Hospital, Surrey, England.

The Royal Earlswood Hospital, formerly known as Earlswood Asylum for Idiots and Imbeciles for founded in 1847, and established at Park House, Highgate in 1948 when fifty patients were admitted. By 1849, 145 patients had been admitted. However the accomadation became insuffient. William Bonython Moffat, the architect was asked to design a New institution at Earlswood. They moved to Earlswood in 1855 and from then the number of inmates was usually about 500. The hospital closed in 1997. It has now been converted into luxery appartments.

Burkes Peerage lists Nerissa as having died in 1940.
No Family attended Nerissa's funeral, Nerissa is in a Paupers Grave, her grave was marked with plastic tags and a serial number until her existance was revealed in the media and Nerissa has now got a gravestone which was sorted by her family.
